What if…
Often, architecture do not tell stories about fairies or magical creatures… not even about magical worlds. But sometimes, architecture (can) tell some things which may seem to have a magical component by creating alternative scenarios for a predefined situation. Different scenarios transform our perception by developing the creativity of ones who appropriates the story itself. Architecture can be very tricky… You should tell a story someday!
This story is about architecture itself, about its elements and ways of understanding, about fairytales in which every one of us sees different things and imagine different scenarios. If one day you will tell a story about architecture you should never describe or show an image with a flying castle. Maybe you should ask the little one first what if a castle can fly or how a flying castle look like…? Sometimes our imagination worth more than a static picture or a frame from a movie… and these small things elevate the capacity to dream on. The script…
When architecture tells a story
Architecture is not just about giant scale.
Usually architecture speaks about spaces design for human necessities. Mostly the scale of spaces varies depending on function, location, timeline period etc. Sometimes the same function can have different scales. A house may be smaller or bigger… can be a place for worship- in ancient times a house of goods-, a place for living, in modern times a house for a small family.
Architecture is a never-ending game.
Most often, in a world of architectural elements, the scale of objects changes every times. One particular aspect is directly linked to changing of space conformation. We, the architects can easily change one square to one circle used for the same purpose. In one way or another is about changing not only the shape but also can significantly alter the signified.
Architecture is about pieces.
All the pieces are the playing elements is a great game of composing, recomposing and finally decomposing massive volumes. From one piece to another our world is a never-ending game in order to achieve the best ways to express our vision. All the pieces linked together, sometimes with strange elements or weird colors, become a giant puzzle.
Architecture is about small details.
Mostly, in order to reach a great architectural structure you need to know the basic elements on small scale. Even if we talk about a wall as part of a room, or about one brick that is part of the same wall or about the molecule structure inside the brick… who finally became a major component of the whole building. Zooming-in or zooming-out in the same time are the key elements to play in the whole game managed by architects in order to reach the best ways to express their ideas.
Architecture is about light.
Architecture we live in is a complex mixture of lights and shadows. Even if we talk about prehistoric times where the cave man light a fire inside the natural habitat or about the modern man lives in cities of lights everything is related to light. We can’t perceive spaces or architecture elements in absence of light. Finally we can see anything without light.
Architecture is about telling a great story.
Moreover the stories express situations or certain stages in which a building have the ability to transform itself into something different. Even on paper or in transformed reality the shape or function of spaces can be easily convert to something unexpected. Definitely, in imaginary worlds, this ability is enlarge and the fields of interpretations and visions can be undefined. Most of the time architecture deforms the facts in order to achieve a great psychological impact.
Last but not least,
Architecture can be almost anything.
Depending on vision almost everything can any may be related with architecture. Form a building to a lamp or a car, train or starship, from a bridge to a pen or the computer helping me now writing these words… has something to do with architecture. Architecture is something we know, we can see, feel or touch… but it can be something completely different: something we can only imagine and only our imagination be capable to manage it. But…
What if…
What if… architecture has no specific scale defying any rules or regulations….changing spaces in real time? Does architecture have the power of acting without the constraint of necessity or fate?
What if… architecture plays with materials without weight… capable of building structures beyond the clouds?
What if… architecture deals with no structure or any structural elements? Therefore can we define spaces in any geometrical conformation?
What if… spaces can adapt to human desires becoming bigger or smaller on demand…? Does architecture have the ability to empower spaces with mind creativity and vision? Alice in Wonderland can be the missing example!
What if… architecture defines a new way of living? Can we adapt for example to access a new working space by climbing a ladder two times a day?
What if… architecture is upside down? Can we face the variation in our system of references?
What if… the story is missing? What become architecture without a story? Can we possible imagine a story without a story?
Post-scriptum: about imaginary…
Imaginary preferential treat similar aspects of reality. Most often a story can generate, inspiration to other stories … Sometimes, the same thing can be received, de-contextualized or perceived different distinctly in multiple scenarios depending on individual levels of interpretability. How these things exists and is required condition often insufficient in order to perceive, understand or interpret?
Somewhere in the interim, there is the opportunity to escape from the monotony of an imperturbable knowable reality. The trend itself of self-prisoner to escape from imaginary worlds transpose a timeless state where the impossible becomes possible and the dream is confused with reality. Confusion of our existence built on inner desire reaches conscious element of individual personality in order to unveil the mystery inside or temptation! Maybe everything is related to rhetorical questioning and variable answers. A look up or down can only become an alternative!

perfectly clear description, excellent concept 🙂
