About the concept… The project aims to reassert of the fortress as a clear-cut geometrical enclosure, converging towards an introverted single large object embraced by the landscape surroundings. The proposed object airily lays and floats over the ruins, accentuating its metaphysic relation with the panoramic landscape. The rooftop, extended over the surrounding vicinity of the existing ruins, acts as a horizontal parasite, defining the contemporary interpretation and formulating its iconic identity.
About the volumetric shape… The geometrical development espouses an irregular form, unifying (under the ceiling) the orthogonally-shaped composition of interior spaces. The parasite tends to develop a special relation with the existing historical remains. Consequentially, it detaches the main glass walls from the ruins, turning them into a projection screen, thus generating an in-between space needed for wall maintenance and natural ventilation.
About the ceiling… The rooftop is a horizontal plane suspended over the historical remains. The ceiling treatment – in dark-blue metal shades – reflects the surroundings upon the interior spaces in two different stages: firstly, by daylight, it reflects the interior spaces and adjacent ruins, and, secondly, mostly during sunsets and sunrises, the ceiling acts as a reflective surface for a complex composition of melted colors. Redirecting the images defined by the composition and decomposition of the natural light that is reflected from the surface of the water through the roof inside the building, we induce a highlighting effect of the continuous movement and transition of the surrounding landscape.
About the functional disposal… The orthogonally composed interior spaces accentuate the coherent relation between the hallway access to the adjacent exhibition spaces pointing at the sea, on the one hand, and the main gallery designed along the courtyard, on the other hand. The suggested interior exhibition pieces are poised nearby the glass façade against the natural panoramic landscape. The interior gallery extends towards the exterior exhibition space defined by the ceiling enclosure. The flexibility of the interior spaces layout makes possible several functional setups: the main gallery spaces extend towards the main access hall and workshop/conference spaces if needed. The exterior spaces predefine two different exhibition routes: one along the outer wall that surrounds the existing ruins descending over the seaside rocky area, singled out by the natural elements on location, and a secondary zone arranged within the inner perimeter of the existing walls, directly related to the indoor gallery and courtyard.
About the materials… As a Reaction to the materiality of existing architectural remains, the parasite introduces a clearly different approach regarding the use of materials for the new building. Structured vertically on three different textural tiers, the materiality of the building is transposed to: the metallic covered rooftop (the reflection of the light), the glass register (the transparency that filters the light) and the floor with tectonic imprints, mimicking the roughness of stone from the existing rocky landscape (absorbing the light).

Despre concept…
